IRCC — Study permit: Prepare for arrival
IRCC — Study permit: After you apply
IRCC — DLI Portal: Student Compliance Reporting
Letter of Introduction
PAL/TAL

- Letter of Introduction
- 여권·TRV/eTA 유효기간

| Letter of Introduction |
English Version
My study permit was approved, but I deferred my start date. Do I need a new application if it is the same school?
A deferral at the same DLI is different from changing to a different school. If IRCC has already approved the study permit application and the student defers enrolment at the same DLI that issued the original LOA, IRCC instructs the student to obtain the DLI's approval of the deferral, get an updated LOA and have a valid Letter of Introduction to show at the port of entry.
If the student changes to a different DLI after approval while outside Canada, the general rule is different: a new study permit application with the new LOA is required, together with the applicable fees.
Official guidance: IRCC — Study permit: Prepare for arrival
What should I prepare if only the start date changed?
For a deferral at the same DLI, confirm that the DLI formally approved the deferral, obtain an updated LOA showing the new start date and make sure your Letter of Introduction remains valid when you travel. Do not assume the old LOA is enough simply because the application was approved.
What if my application is still being processed?
If you defer while the study permit application is still in process, IRCC instructs you to get the deferral approved by the DLI, obtain the updated LOA and submit the new LOA through your online account or the IRCC web form.
Official guidance: IRCC — Study permit: After you apply
What if I change schools instead of only changing the start date?
That is a different situation. If your study permit application has already been approved and you change your DLI before entering Canada, IRCC says you must submit a new study permit application with the new LOA and pay the applicable fees.
What if I am already in Canada when I defer?
IRCC's compliance guidance states that if a study permit holder is in Canada at the time of deferral and wants to remain in Canada, the student must begin studies in the following semester or within 150 calendar days from the date the deferred enrolment is confirmed, whichever comes first.
Official guidance: IRCC — DLI Portal: Student Compliance Reporting
Can I work before the deferred program starts?
Generally, no. IRCC states that you are not allowed to work on or off campus until you begin your studies in Canada. Arriving early with an approved study permit does not create a right to work before the new program actually starts.
Does the Letter of Introduction expiry date still matter?
Yes. A same-DLI deferral does not automatically extend an expired Letter of Introduction. Your passport and any required eTA or TRV must also be valid for travel. Study permit approval and the documents required to board a flight and enter Canada should be checked separately.

What about a PAL or TAL?
Whether a new PAL/TAL is required depends on the application route, timing and available exemptions. If the situation changes enough to require a new study permit application, especially because of a DLI change, the current PAL/TAL requirements should be checked again rather than assuming the earlier document automatically carries over.
Build one timeline before you defer
Record the original LOA start date, date the school approved the deferral, updated LOA date, new program start date, Letter of Introduction expiry date, passport and travel-document expiry dates, planned date of entry, any 150-day compliance deadline if you are already in Canada, and the date you can actually begin working.

A deferral is not merely an academic scheduling change. It can affect immigration documents, arrival planning, status compliance and work authorization. Start by identifying whether you are staying with the same DLI or changing DLIs, and make sure the updated start date is consistently supported across your documents.
Which documents should you compare before confirming a deferral?
Keep the original and updated plans together. Compare the old and new LOAs for the institution, DLI number, program and dates. Save written confirmation of the deferral and check any conditions for keeping your place. Review the Letter of Introduction against the date you actually plan to enter Canada, then separately check the passport and travel documents.
Also ask the school about tuition already paid, any transfer of fees to the new term and the registration deadline. Review accommodation and travel bookings against the new timetable. This is a planning checklist, not a universal list of required application documents.
The school's permission to defer and the validity of immigration documents are separate checks. An updated LOA does not automatically change every other expiry date.
Example: moving a September start to January
This is a hypothetical example, not an account of a successful client application. A student still in Korea who defers at the same DLI should obtain the school's written approval and updated LOA, then check the validity of the Letter of Introduction for the intended arrival. Confirming only that the school is unchanged can leave an important expiry date unnoticed.
A student already in Canada needs a further review of status and study conditions. Waiting abroad and remaining in Canada during a study gap are different situations. For an in-Canada deferral, check the next-semester and 150-day rule explained above. If the new start date does not fit the applicable conditions, address the status implications before the deadline.
Record four dates separately: the original start date, the school's deferral confirmation date, the new start date and the intended entry date. Linking each date to its supporting document makes a discussion with the school or adviser more useful.
Official guidance: IRCC — deferred enrolment and compliance
How should you explain the change?
A clear explanation can follow this order: original plan, reason for the change, revised plan and supporting documents. Make sure dates and program details match across the explanation and the LOA. Keep copies of what you submitted and any submission confirmation.
Ask the school about the updated LOA, fee arrangements, registration and any late-arrival deadline. Which update you send to IRCC depends on whether the application is pending or already approved and whether the DLI changed. This is a practical way to organise accurate information, not a prescribed approval formula.
How should you budget for the gap?
Do not plan to fund the period before studies begin through student employment. Recheck housing, insurance, flights and tuition dates, and set aside living expenses for the waiting period. For a focused consultation, summarise your current location, application stage, whether the DLI is unchanged, the revised start date and the approval-letter expiry date.
