IRCC — Travelling outside Canada as a permanent resident

IRCC — Understand PR status

IRCC — Permanent resident travel document: About the process

IRCC — Guide 5529: Applying for a PRTD

IRCC — Urgent PR card or PRTD processing

English Version

My Canadian PR card expired while I am abroad. Do I need a PRTD to fly back to Canada?

In most cases, yes. A Canadian permanent resident outside Canada who does not have a valid PR card generally needs a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to board a commercial carrier, such as an airplane, bus, train or boat, for travel back to Canada. An expired PR card, however, does not by itself terminate permanent resident status.

Official guidance: IRCC — Travelling outside Canada as a permanent resident

Does an expired PR card mean I lost permanent resident status?

No. IRCC specifically states that PR status is not lost merely because the PR card expires. The card is evidence of PR status and an important travel document for returning to Canada on a commercial carrier.

PR status can end through specific legal events, such as a formal determination after an inquiry or PRTD appeal, voluntary renunciation, an enforceable removal order, or becoming a Canadian citizen. Card expiry alone is not one of those events.

Official guidance: IRCC — Understand PR status

What do I need to return by air?

If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, the PRTD is normally the relevant document for boarding a commercial carrier. Airlines and other transportation companies check travel documents before boarding, so arriving at the airport with only an expired card can create a boarding problem.

A PRTD is normally valid for a single entry. After returning to Canada, you should apply for a new PR card as appropriate.

Official guidance: IRCC — PRTD: About the process

Can I simply use my old COPR?

Do not assume that you can. IRCC's PRTD guide states that a Record of Landing and certain Confirmation of Permanent Residence documents are not valid travel documents for boarding a commercial carrier to Canada. A historic landing document does not replace the need for the travel document required by the carrier rules.

Official guide: IRCC — Guide 5529

What if I cross the land border in a private vehicle?

IRCC distinguishes private vehicles from commercial carriers. If you arrive in a car, truck, motorcycle or recreational vehicle that you own, borrow or rent, you may use a PR card, PRTD or other documents to establish your status at the border.

That does not eliminate the border examination. CBSA can still verify your identity and status, and a separate residency obligation issue may arise if you have spent extensive time outside Canada.

How do I apply for a PRTD?

A PRTD is applied for from outside Canada. IRCC provides an online application route through the Permanent Residence Portal. The application should accurately address your PR status, travel and residence history, and evidence relevant to the residency obligation.

Processing time varies, so a booked flight is not a guarantee that the document will be issued by a particular date.

Can I request urgent processing?

In qualifying circumstances, you may request urgent processing, but it is not guaranteed. IRCC provides an urgent PRTD route for certain applicants abroad, including situations where the return flight is within the next 5 days and there is a supported urgent reason. Examples can include employment needs, serious illness, a family member's serious illness or death, or loss or theft of a PR card while temporarily abroad.

For an urgent PR card application inside Canada, IRCC also warns that the minimum processing time can be 3 weeks and delivery by the travel date is not guaranteed.

Official guidance: IRCC — Urgent PR card or PRTD processing

What should I check before travelling?

Review the PR card expiry date, departure and return dates, whether you will return by a commercial carrier or private vehicle, whether a PRTD will be required, your recent physical-presence history for the residency obligation, and your plan to renew the PR card after returning.

The practical distinction is simple but important: PR status and the PR card are not the same thing. The card can expire without ending PR status, while the absence of a valid card can still prevent you from boarding a commercial carrier back to Canada.

Does the residency obligation also matter?

A PRTD is more than a temporary replacement for an expired card. The assessment includes your residency obligation. For someone who has held PR status for at least five years, the relevant review generally concerns the five years immediately before applying. A newer PR must be able to meet the 730-day requirement within the first five years. Some time abroad may count under specific exceptions, but the conditions and evidence need separate review.

Create a travel history from records rather than memory. Compare departure and return dates with supporting records and identify gaps before submitting. A Canadian mailing address or bank account alone does not turn time abroad into physical presence in Canada.

A practical example: your return flight is next week

This is a hypothetical planning example, not a client success story. If you discover an expired card while visiting Korea, first write down your location, PR date, passport and card expiry dates, intended return flight and transit route.

Next, organise the application documents using the official checklist. Check scans for missing edges and unreadable pages. If you may qualify for urgent processing, follow the current instructions and document the reason for urgency. At the same time, review ticket-change conditions and your planned return to work. These practical steps help manage uncertainty; they cannot guarantee an approval date.

After submission, monitor the account and email address used for the application. Respond to requests within the stated deadline. If family members travel together, check each person's documents individually rather than assuming that one person's readiness means everyone is ready.

Three assumptions to avoid

  • A renewal receipt is enough to fly. Evidence that you applied is different from holding the required valid travel document.
  • Rerouting through the United States solves everything. Any U.S. entry or transit requirements and the actual method of crossing into Canada must be checked separately.
  • A booked return flight guarantees processing by that date. Plan for possible changes and explain urgent circumstances accurately.

For a focused consultation, prepare your PR acquisition date, travel history, document expiry dates, intended return date and any supported urgent circumstances.
